UK: Myanmar deaths 'far greater' than reported

YANGON, Myanmar (CNN) -- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown says he believes the death toll in the Myanmar crackdown to be "far greater" than has so far been reported, The Associated Press has said.

Shots were fired to clear crowds across the country Friday as authorities reportedly cut Internet connections, while graphic new video footage showed troops using deadly force.

Brown made his comments, AP said, after telephone discussions with President Bush and Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao. Brown's office refused to supply any estimates, the agency added, as UK diplomatic staff in the country were not certain of events beyond Yangon.

Witnesses told CNN that police opened fire on crowds to disperse demonstrators, resulting in fatalities. Other sources said they had spoken to a Western witness who had seen up to 35 bodies in the streets.

AP also......

“Heroes” and “Prison Break” Torrents Tracked by MiiVi.org

Written by Ernesto on September 28, 2007

The latest episodes of Heroes and Prison Break have been downloaded over a million times already. However, quite a few paranoid downloaders noticed that the .torrent files, apparently released by EZTV, were using the MiiVi.org tracker. A trap perhaps?

No, Miivi.org has nothing to do with the alleged honeypot project from MediaDefender which was hosted on MiiVi.com. On the contrary, the Miivi tracker is a project in part sponsored by The Pirate Bay and other BitTorrent sites.

Initially MediaDefender, an anti-piracy organization that has been known to run fake BitTorrent trackers, had plans to use MiiVi.com for their video download site, but those plans were canceled after we posted about it.

It’s great to see that the name “Miivi” is changing into something positive now. The BitTorrent community can use another stable public tracker, especially now TorrentBox ......

More troubles: Vick positive for marijuana
QB, already facing sentencing for dogfighting, can't leave house at night
The Associated Press
Updated: 7:23 p.m. ET Sept 26, 2007

RICHMOND, Va. - Michael Vick is now likely one misstep from jail.

The disgraced Atlanta Falcons quarterback tested positive for marijuana earlier this month, a violation of the conditions of his release as he awaits sentencing in federal court on a dogfighting charge that already jeopardizes his freedom and career.

Now, he’s incurred the ire of the judge who could sentence him to up to five years in prison in the dogfighting case. On the day of Vick’s guilty plea, U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson warned that he wouldn’t be amused by any additional trouble.

Hudson, who will sentence Vick on Dec. 10, on Wednesday ordered him confined to his Virginia home between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. with electronic monitoring. He also must submit to random drug testing.

If Vick fails another drug test, he likely will ......

The Pirate Bay Details Charges Against Media Companies

Written by Ernesto on September 26, 2007

Last week, The Pirate Bay announced that it filed charges against against some of the key players in the entertainment industry for corrupting and sabotaging their BitTorrent tracker. We asked Brokep, one of The Pirate Bay founders to give us some more background information on this counterattack that will, once again, embarrass the entertainment industry.

The Pirate Bay filed charges against 10 major media companies, including Paramount Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox and Universal Music Group. Fighting fire with fire some would say, but what’s really motivating them to take on these companies?

TorrentFreak: What is the main reason why you decided to file charges?

Brokep: To make the big companies aware about their own wrong doings. They are huge corporations where I’m sure a lot of different people decide. I don’t want that to be an excuse, I want them to take ......

Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIA

Written by Ernesto on September 25, 2007

Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers has allegedly been taken offline by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). Both the tracker and the website have been unresponsive for nearly 24 hours now.

Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIAAs of now it is still unsure what exactly happened, but the popular Dutch news site nu.nl reports that the CRIA is responsible for the downtime.

TorrentFreak contacted some of the Demonoid administrators, but they are not sure what happened either. It is certainly possible that Demonoid’s Canadian ISP pulled the plug after being pressured by the ......

FUCK BUSH

The Colorado State University student newspaper is under fire after publishing a two-word editorial statement about President Bush.

The Rocky Mountain Collegian published the editorial on its Sept. 21 opinion page, saying "Taser this .. (expletive) BUSH."

University officials released a statement explaining their concern for response to the editorial, and that it has no control over its student media.

“While we understand (the editorial) is upsetting and offensive to many people, CSU is prohibited by law from censoring or regulating the content of its student media publications,” CSU said in a written statement.

The newspaper’s editor-in-chief wrote a letter to readers to explain that “our intentions were not malicious.”

“While the editorial board feels strongly with regard to first amendment issues, we have found the unintended consequences of such a bold statement to be extremely disheartening,” wrote J. David McSwane, editor-in-chief.

The editorial board, which consists of ......
