I don't know if you guys have noticed this, but we're currently experiencing a Michael Bay-free summer. And thank God for it. Yes, Michael Bay has brought us plenty of great entertainment in the past, but this summer's big blockbusters are actually leaving room for something a little different than the Bay-Bruckheimer mold-- the easy-breezy humor of Iron Man, the old-fashioned stuffiness of Indiana......
With a title like Hellboy, and an Oscar-winning director behind it, you might expect Hellboy 2: The Golden Army to be some serious meditation on life and the underworld and the duty of a superhero. But as it nears it release date, Hellboy is proving itself to be a gorgeous comic book adaptation that also has a sense of humor. I hate to say it, but it definitely makes The Dark Knight look glum and depressing......
If you haven't been following the latest gossip about Planet Terror director Robert Rodriguez and actress Rose McGowan-- and really, why would you be?-- here's the scoop. They've over! Or not! It depends on who you believe, after The New York Post broke the story of their breakup and People debunked it the next day.
What makes this more interesting than most celebrity breakup stories is that McGowan......
It's truth that film critics accept early on in their careers: Bad reviews don't mean a damn thing when you've got a big star, big special effects, or a well-timed release date. That's why most of us had resigned ourselves to seeing Hancock walk away with a scrillion dollars this weekend, even though pretty much every critic (and particularly the ones at Cinema Blend) hated it.
But there might be......
It wasn’t until 1996 that 4th of July became the American moviegoing weekend. I guess before that Americans celebrated their independence by going outside and looking around at their country or something. How boring. In 1996 Will Smith announced his presence as a box office phenom with Independence Day, and taught us the right way to celebrate freedom: by sitting in a dark room watching shit blow......
Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey were made for each other. Or at least made to make crummy movies together. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Fool’s Gold, and on the sixth day they rested. Or not. Actually it looks like they aren’t going to give us a break from terrible rom-coms. It was only a few months ago that Fool’s Gold flopped, and now they’re working on another.
WENN claims they’re planning......
Yesterday we brought you a selection of the first bunch of Dark Knight reviews here. They weren’t just all resoundingly positive, they were flat out bat-drool. In the 24 hours since posting that story, the number of rabidly devoted reviews of The Dark Knight has only multiplied, with even more frantic, mind-blowing praise coming from every single corner. If there’s been a single negative word said......
Alex Proyas is the visionary director of such groundbreaking, thought provoking science fiction movies as The Crow, Dark City, and I, Robot. So what the heck is he doing directing another one of Nicolas Cage’s formula, thriller chillers? I have no idea, but judging from the first ever trailer for their movie Knowing, Proyas hasn’t been able to change Cage’s traditionally banal ways.
I’ll say......
No movie studio among the ones I’m willing to take the time to research (read: no research) has accomplished what the guys at Pixar have. Simply put: they’ve never made a stinker. Every film they’ve ever made has met with critical, audience, and box office success. Nine movies, nine great movies which nearly everyone has the good sense to love and maybe when no one’s looking, even hug. Pixar’s string......
