'Rachel Getting Married' Has Arthouses Getting Busy!

It has been a long, hot, bone-dry summer at America’s arthouses. There were a few April specialty hits like Overture’s The Visitor ($9.4M cume), Thinkfilm’s Then She Found Me ($3.75M cume) and Fox Searchlight’s Young @ Heart ($4M cume), which played into......

Just because the main character would be tiny, doesn’t mean this story can’t be brought to the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. and Red Wagon have recruited Kevin Lima to direct the film version of Tom Thumb, Thumb. This won’t be much of a stretch for Lima because the last film he directed was the fairytale-themed hit Enchanted.

Thumb will be shot in live action,......

The perennial complaint about American movies is that it's so, so hard for women to find decent roles. And for the most part, that's absolutely true-- dozens of wives and girlfriends and "hot chicks" out there, but very few fleshed-out, real female characters onscreen.

But Oscar season is when actresses get a chance to climb out of the muck and make their mark, turning in what will likely wind up......

Pick a random bunch of names of actors out of a hat, and you might just come up with the cast of Julie Taymor's The Tempest, an adaptation of the Shakespeare play. Taymor, who set teen romance to Beatles songs last year with Across the Universe, is apparently set on breaking the rules from the first moment in this one; cast in the lead role of Prospero, the duke on the island, is Helen Mirren-- yes,......

After playing Charles “Bird” Parker in the movie Bird back in 1988, Forrest Whitaker if finally ready to get back into jazz musician mode. He will be starring and directing a biopic of the late Louis Armstrong’s life. Although there is no question Whitaker can act, seeing as how he has an Oscar at his house, his directing skills have not quite reached the pitch of critical acclaim.

His past forays......

Waltz With Bashir is an animated documentary. It is a surrealist look an Israeli Army mission, through the imagination of a man who participated. The movie is apparently one of the most visually stunning, and yet horrifyingly graphic documentaries to come out in a long time. This year, it will not qualify for the Documentary category at the Oscars, but it is not for the reason you think.

As......

It sounds like all the time Guillermo del Toro has been spending with Peter Jackson has had its effect. Del toro, when discussing The Hobbit, is sounding a lot like Jackson did when talking about his three Lord of the Rings movies-- a good thing for anyone hoping for two movies as narratively consistent as LOTR, which should be pretty much all of us. Del Toro spoke to MTV News about the two Hobbit,......

Man, the future is looking bleak. Not only is the economy falling apart around us, but every time you turn around it seems Hollywood is making another movie about how, in the year whatever, society is going to be even worse than it is now. The next people to join the miserable ranks of the future are former Lost star Dominic Monaghan (we still miss you, Charlie) and former Six Feet Under Star Freddy......

HOLLYWOOD - "Make my day"--are three words uttered by Clint Eastwood during a moment that would go down in bad ass cinematic history. Well, according to the audience consensus at the press screening of the Changeling at the 46th New York Film Festival,......
