HONG KONG superstar Jackie Chan has set up shop in Kuala Lumpur!

No, he is not opening a cinema for his famous martial art films. Instead, the popular plucky actor has opened a coffeehouse named after himself called the Jackie Chan’s Cafe.

The spirited Jackie was in town recently to launch the cafe on the Muse Floor (Level 6) of the Starhill Gallery.

Hundreds of his fans were at the Starhill Gallery to greet him when he arrived to open his first lifestyle cafe in Malaysia.

Jackie, who has made a few of his action movies in Malaysia, has pledged that 2% of the cafe’s profit would be donated to local charitable organisations for disadvantaged children.

“Each year, I would look for ways to raise money for charity to help needy people,” Jackie said. “Why? Because when I was young, I was very poor and many people had helped me get to where I am today. I am doing my part to repay their kindness to me.”

Jackie said that he wanted to make his cafe an affordable lifestyle joint that would allow people enjoy coffee and snacks and, at the same time, contribute to charity.

According to YTL Corporation Bhd group managing director Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, who was present at the opening, the cafe’s concept means that its success was not about how much profit was made but the amount of contribution it generates for charitable causes.

“It is no wonder that Jackie is listed by the international magazine Forbes as one of the world’s 10 most generous celebrities,” Yeoh said.

To commemorate the opening of the cafe, Jackie sportingly put on an apron and made a cup of coffee for Yeoh.

Jackie also presented prizes to winners of the United Buddy Bears colouring contest held earlier that day and matched the donations collected on the day with a ringgit-for-ringgit contribution.

The Starhill Gallery management also pledged a similar ringgit-for-ringgit ......

David Copperfield's performance in Malaysia this month has been cancelled after the FBI launched an investigation into the world-famous US magician and illusionist, a report said Monday.

The organisers of his two-day stint here on October 30 and 31 said the decision to cancel was made after agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigations raided Copperfield's storage warehouse in Los Angeles last week.

"He needs to help in the investigations. Copperfield is not prevented from leaving the United States but he needs time to get to the bottom of things," Arianna Teoh, director of Arianna Event Management, said in The Star newspaper.

FBI agents took away a computer hard drive, digital camera memory chip and seized nearly two million dollars in cash during the raid last Wednesday.

They also visited the MGM-Grand Hotel and Casino on the Vegas Strip, where Copperfield often performs.

The FBI has not revealed the purpose of the raid and David Chesnoff, lawyer for the 51-year old magician, issued only a brief statement.

"We understand there is an investigation, we are in touch with the investigators, and are respecting the confidentiality of the investigation," Chesnoff said.

Teoh said Copperfield's performance could still take place later.

"The people here and all his fans have been very supportive of him and if he is cleared, then it is possible that he will still continue with the show," she said.

MOSCOW: The Soyuz TMA-10 craft landed safely in Kazakhstan at 6.37pm Malaysian time.

The Soyuz was carrying Angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and Russians - Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and flight engineer Oleg Kotov.

According to AP, the Soyuz craft veered off its designated course while heading for its landing in the steppes of Kazakhstan.

Russian search and rescue teams quickly located the craft, which landed just under 340km west of the designated landing site near Arkalyk, Kazakhstan, Nasa reported on its website.

It said all the three crew members were feeling fine.

The spacecraft's descent deviated from the intended path apparently due to a computer glitch, and the crew were subjected to higher than normal gravity load on their descent, Russia's Mission Control spokesman Valery Lyndin said.

Yurchikhin and Kotov were returning home after a six-month stint at the international space station. While Dr Sheikh Muszaphar had been at the orbital outpost since Oct 12.
