Memorial Day is a national observance commemorating US men and women who have died while in military service to our country.

It is also the unofficial beginning of summer. The Indianapolis 500 auto race is also run during the weekend. It's interesting that not only the 500 was run, but the NASCAR Coca Cola 600, and the Monaco Grand Prix. One could spend the entire Sunday watching auto racing from Dawn to Dusk.

On Monday, we had a gathering of friends for barbecue. The weather did not cooperate, so everyone stayed inside while I tended the grill... Owing to our multicultural family, the menu had an interesting mix:

Kalbi - Beef Short Ribs (Korean)

Chap Chae - Korean Rice Noodle dish

Hamburgers & Hot Dogs - American

Quinoa Salad - South American (Peru?)

Shrimp - Asian generic :-)

This Joke

...Reminded me of one I heard on Car Talk a month or so ago. It was one of their regular "Puzzler" segments.

A guy is helping his boss work on his car. He was dispatched to the parts store to get a new thermostat. He has the part written on a piece of paper. He approaches the counter telling the clerk he needs a "28 ounce thermostat." Puzzled, the clerk mentioned that he'd never heard of a "28 ounce thermostat." Disappointed, the guy starts to walk away. Before he walks out, the clerk asks for his telephone number in case he figures it out.

Not five minutes later, the clerk calls the guy back stating, "of course we have a 28 ounce thermostat. Tell him we also have 26 and 24 ounce thermostats too!"

Can you figure out what it was?

Take some Matzoh, a flat, unleavened bread eaten during the Jewish observance of Passover, spread some margarine and top with salt. Suddenly I'm 8 years old again, sitting at the kitchen table.

This is one of my early memories of childhood, and Passover. Tonight, I made up this as a late snack before retiring, and I feel like I'm back in NY and it's 1969 again. Amazing that is the year the Mets won the World Series...

Other Passover memories: The circus came to town around that time. Badgering my parents for a hamburger, knowing I could not eat any bread that week. The "other" sets of plates and silverware we used only during this week.

A final memory: Matzoh Brei is a fried egg and matzoh recipe eaten at this time. I have a split skillet that folds over. The skillet is perhaps 50 years or older, handed down from my Mom. I make Matzo Brei with this skillet every year, as a tribute to my Mom's memory.

This series never ceases to amaze me. The focus is on politics and the media, using the never ending drug wars, homeless, education and corruption to blend the story together.

It's sad to see my favorite characters go away, however. I won't spoiler anyone; however, the loss of a major villian was hard to take.

Now, the detectives are creating a phony panic of a serial killer to get the time & resources needed to go after the big baddie (Marlowe). This is a an interesting twist I really want to follow.

Half way through the final season, and I'm hooked, as usual.

About to catch up on the fifth & final season of The Wire. This has been my all time favorite HBO series. Each season was based on a different perspective of life in Baltimore, MD. I especially liked Season #2, the one that covered life on the Docks, drugs and human trafficking.

First Season of Jericho

Too bad so many had to die. Now a new chapter in the story of Jericho evolves. We know more about the conspiracy and who is involved.

Just starting S2 episodes... Not certain I like the direction the series is taking.

Don't blog at all, but I do like to download tv shows I've missed. Working through S1 of Jericho. Also, I d/l Lost episodes as they are posted... I'm not at home when it airs, and I don't have a DVR at this time..
