Putting Lipstick on a (Non-Political) Pig

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

window.google_render_ad();Last night, those of us who were unable to avail ourselves of cable television, and were left to watching the broadcast channels were ‘treated' to a new presentation of the Grammy nominations. Usually announced in the early morning, on some nondescript news program, the news of the performers slated for the faux competition was announced in a grandiose manner during prime time television.

The hour of ‘entertainment' was part commercial excess, part news announcement, and part tourist announcement. You see, the opening of a museum in Los Angeles was announced with the show, making those wanting to visit California during their vacations have yet another reason to visit the City of the Angels. The museum will devote itself to the wondrous excesses of the Grammy awards, all 50 years extant.

We were given the announcements of the nomination process, a few looks back into the past winners, and some moments of songs that had previously won the award.

Certainly the past songs were truly spectacular, however, the choice of the performer looks as though it was done by a few sticking points on a dart board.

The horrendous treatment of the Carly Simon classic ‘You're So Vain' by the Foo Fighters was......

Google Chrome Coming Out Of Beta

Posted by HAZEL December 10, 2008

Google is taking Chrome out of Beta barely months after the its initial release and prior to completing the plugin architecture. Is Chrome ready for prime time or is Google giving it a nudge to grab a share of new computer search queries?

The official release has come just over three months after the initial test release, a record pace for a Google product.

As an example, Gmail has been in Beta since April of 2004 when the first invites started trickling out to the public. Over four years later the Google email service shows no signs of being made official.

And why should Google make its services other than search official? The company is constantly tinkering with new experimental features that users are happy to tinker with whether they're official or not.

Unfortunately for fans of the company whose motto is, "Don't be evil," the only clear motivation for the move seems to be greed. Specifically, Google wants to own the search bar in the browsers of laptops and PCs that are set to be released in 2009.

OEMs cannot distribute Beta software along with their shiny new computing hardware as one of the reasons for the move and the millions of dollars in search query revenue that Google will make from having Chrome installed on forthcoming......

Purchasing Genuine Microsoft Software

Am I buying from a reputable reseller?

Buy from resellers who sell only genuine Microsoft software. Locate a reputable reseller using local resources such as a Chamber of Commerce, the Better Business Bureau, and consumer publications.

In addition to local resellers, you also have the option to purchase genuine Microsoft software online. Learn more about the digital download options at www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/digitalpurchases.

Is a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) included?

A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is a label that helps you identify genuine Microsoft software. Retail Microsoft software ships with a COA affixed to the outside of the packaging. If a COA is not present on the packaging, it is not genuine software and is not properly licensed. A COA should never be purchased without the software it authenticates.

TIP: Whether you purchased your software from a retailer, or small or large manufacturer, the COA that authenticates the software will have special features that set it apart from counterfeits. Current COAs have a Port-HoleTM near the middle with interwoven thread that runs vertically through the center. These features change though, so be sure to check the How to Tell site frequently to make sure that you have the most up-to-date information.

Learn more about COAs at www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/coa.

I am a huge Google geek, so these Google facts were like soft porn to me.

1. Google receives daily search requests from all over the world, including Antarctica.

2. Google’s Home Page Has 63 Validation Errors. Don’t believe me?: Check Google Validation

3. The Google search engine receives about a billion search requests per day.

4. The infamous “I’m feeling lucky” button is nearly never used. However, in trials it was found that removing it would somehow reduce the Google experience. Users wanted it kept. It was a comfort button.

5. Due to the sparseness of the homepage, in early user tests they noted people just sitting looking at the screen. After a minute of nothingness, the tester intervened and asked ‘Whats up?’ to which they replied “We are waiting for the rest of it”. To solve that particular problem the Google Copyright message was inserted to act as a crude end of page marker.

6. The name ‘Google’ was an accident. A spelling mistake made by the original founders who thought they were going for ‘Googol’.

7. Google has the largest network of translators in the world.

8. Employees are encouraged to use 20% of their time working on their own projects. Google News, Orkut are both examples of projects that grew from this working model.

9. Google consists of over 450,000 servers, racked up in clusters located in data centers around the world.

10. Google started in January, 1996 as a research project at Stanford University, by Ph.D. candidates Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were 24 years old and 23 years old respectively.

11. Google is a mathematical term 1 followed by one hundred zeroes. The term was coined by Milton Sirotta, nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasne.

12. Number of languages in which you can have the Google home page set up, including......

How To Overcome Difficult Times And Succeed With Your Business - Entrepreneur University

This week’s Entrepreneur University comes thanks to Dr. John Oda. John is a business peak performance expert, an author, and speaker frequently called upon to provide corporate training, workshops and seminars for many companies in the United States.

Today John shares his advice on how you can overcome difficult times and succeed with your business:

“One day, I had received a call from a potential client who told me that she had just lost everything in her business because she went through a divorce. At that moment, I felt sad for her loss and then offered her a solution to move forward in her business.

We all go through problems in our lives. The question is, how do you move forward when life blindsides you in a way that can be painful. Did you know that you are bigger than your problem? And, how do you prepare for life’s problems?

From working in the mental health field for over 21 years, I explain to business people that it is a MUST to renew yourself on a daily basis. An example of doing this is to use auto suggestion that was prescribed by Napoleon Hill, the author of “Think and Grow Rich”. This......

Tips & Tools to Make Your Computer Run Faster

A few months ago, my PC took over 10 minutes to start up. Now it just takes about a minute. Want to know how I did it? Here's how:

1.  Upgrade Your RAM

Yeah, the most obvious tip but people hardly upgrade it. RAM these days is very cheap, especially if you buy it through Amazon or eBay. When I checked Amazon, the price of 1 GB RAM was around $20-$30.

2. Get Rid of Unneeded Software

Most PCs come shipped with unneeded software. Uninstall all of them. I'm sure there are better alternatives to those software. For example, my PC came shipped from hp with lots of bloatware such as HP Image Zone, Norton AntiVirus 2004, Record Now! CD & DVD Burning software etc. I uninstalled all of them and replaced them with better software like Picasa and Nero.

3. Keep Only One Browser

This is part of the getting rid of unneeded applications but I decided to separate it because so many people have 3, or even 4 browsers installed on their computer. I used to do this; I used to have Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. Now I only have Mozilla Firefox. Yes, I even removed Internet Explorer!

Now you might be wondering how do I update Windows without Internet Explorer, right? Here's how I do it, and you can too: To update Windows from within Firefox, just download the IE Tab add-on. Using that plugin, you can access IE only sites like Windows Update with ease.

4. Get an All-in-One Solution for Your IM Needs

I'm guessing that most of you have at least 2 IM clients installed. Uninstall all of them. Instead, get Digsby. Digsby is an All-in-One solution for your social media and IM needs.

5. Limit the Programs that Start Automatically

The programs that load automatically after your Windows starts can severely cripple the load time. To reduce the number of programs that start auto-load, download Revo Uninstaller. Disable the autoloading of applications carefully......

Download Torrents Anonymously with TorrentPrivacy

Privacy has always been a major concern for BitTorrent users and there are only a few ways to remain anonymous. By using a secure connection, as the new TorrentPrivacy tool offers, you can bypass almost every firewall or traffic shaping application, while making sure that nobody can see what you're downloading.

torrent privacyThe TorrentPrivacy software has been developed so that anybody can use it, from BitTorrent novices through to experts. TorrentPrivacy uses a pre-configured version of v1.7.7 uTorrent, so there are no settings that have to be entered manually.

It pretty much works straight out of the box. First you have to chose a connection point - at the moment they have servers in Europe, USA, Canada. The closer the connection point is to your true location, the faster the speeds you will get from the service. Then, after you've chosen a connection point, just click connect and the program will connect to the server. The connection is made through the SSH protocol with 128bit encryption, which prevents traffic shaping and keeps your traffic ambiguous to prying eyes.

TorrentFreak briefly tested the application and it worked surprisingly well. People who are used to uTorrent wouldn't notice any difference, besides the fact that they are using version 1.7.7 instead of......
