VIIII - The HERMIT

The Hermit, teacher, researcher, mean meditation, devotion, knowledge, loneliness and patience. Its limits are carnal and emotional. Just like Merlin which makes and demolishes the kings but who knows his stones of obstacle, the ambition and the love and which, to keep itself some, accepts loneliness. This is why the myth of Merlin continues to live in this mystery of the tarot.
The Juggler, while arriving at this chart, will learn how to live as a recluse and to acquire patience.

The HERMIT and the myth of Merlin.
In Ireland, as in Gaulle of the North-West, one found small statuettes of encapuchonnés gods, a lamp or a stick with the hand. The lamp punctuated the rites of passages of the birth to death. The port of the cap announced those which looked after the patients on their passage or buried the corpses, facilitating the advance of the heart towards beyond. The stick was related to the snake, animal initiating which changes skin every year but carries in him the limitation come from the powers of the ground. Merlin has all these attributes in the songs of the Celtic bards, first sources of its myth, which also speak about it as about a druid who made and demolished the kings.
In the mists of time, in Celtic country, a king named lived Guartigirn. So that its name remains forever in the memories, he wanted to raise the city, most beautiful of the world. The consulted druids said all to him the same thing: he was to find a newborn of a virgin and the immoler with the site chosen for the foundations. The king made seek this child in all his kingdom, in vain. Impatienté, it decided to begin the construction of the city, but very crumbled before even as the walls do not rise. Again, the king made seek a newborn of a virgin. Finally, in a convent of druids, an old instructor revealed with an emissary that all its pupils presented this characteristic since they all were initiated. The old druid entrusted to the envoy of the king the last initiated child, the Merlin young person. When they arrived in front of the king, this one wanted immoler the child by burying it alive, where were to build the foundations of the city. But Merlin, approximately ten years old, says to him that it would be wrong to kill it because it knew why the walls always crumbled. “Under the foundations, it there has a pocket of water, affirmed Merlin by raising its stick above its head. In this pocket, a large bag and inside two dragons, one red, the other white. These are the movements that they make to release which make move the ground.” The king immediately ordered to dig and, indeed, one found the large bag which one opened imprudently.
At once, the two dragons left. The child took a torch and plugged them. The monsters fought between them until death and the ground absorbs them. Little time after, the city was drawn up, solid and splendid. The king asked Merlin to remain close to him but this one refused, because it was to turn over to study close to its old Master. The years passed, the king was accustomed to his city. Soon it started more to find it so beautiful. He dreamed again in a city from which null other could never equalize the beauty. Feeling to come death it charged its successor, Uter Pendragon (killer of dragon) to find Merlin which would help it to build its Utopia.
Merlin had finished its instruction for a long time and lived as a hermit in a forest; it hardly left the edges of the lake where a child very beautiful fairy lived: Viviane. When the envoys of the new king discovered it, it did not make any difficulty to follow them because it knew its future. Arrived in front of Uter, Merlin had a vision: the stones of the future city were in Ireland, it was necessary to raise an army to go to seek them; they would form walls so strange that years and years later people would wonder about their source and their significance.
King Uter left for Ireland and declared the war with his inhabitants. Having crushed, it negotiated the freedom of its prisoners against the stones described by Merlin. But those were so heavy, if enormous, that one could not transport them. Then Merlin, which belonged to forwarding, explained why they had been formerly brought by giants and that they had healing virtues and cured the wounds. Only an enchantment could move them. And it started to laughing very extremely, of this laughter of the gods and the prophets which, in all the myths of the world, has the capacity to destroy inertia. The stones are reflected to go, the army followed them. They stopped close to Salisbury in England. (It would be about Stonehenge.)
Merlin left for its forest where it found Viviane become adult. The fairy did not cease any more, as from this moment, to require the magic formula of him so that no man can touch it. As Merlin felt love for Viviane, it was kept well to give it him. Then, for the third time, from the emissary of the king came to seek it. Uter had fallen in love with the woman from her vassal and combined the duke of Cornouailles and it had lost of it drinking and to eat it. Merlin intended to say to him that it would not be interfered this business which it found dishonest person and who a king unable to control his desires is inapt to control, when suddenly a vision ravelled in front of its eyes. He saw being born from the one night union between Uter and beautiful Ingerna the so much awaited king who would join together Bretagnes and to which he could entrust the mission with which he was charged. Then Merlin made drink a philtre with Uter which took the appearance of the duke. As this one was in war, it could go in its castle and spend one night with the woman so much desired. Fascinated by the beauty of Ingerna, he forgot that at dawn he was to take again his true face. He was delayed, and when he left the room a maidservant saw it and did not recognize its Master.
However the philtre had very removed memory and any desire with king Uter. Merlin could leave to find Viviane. This one started again to always ask him the same question while adding as, without this formula, it could not become magician. Merlin, an unknown pain in the middle, gave him the words, then decided to turn over to Uter. “I will return, says it to Viviane, to claim you the sword that you guards at the bottom of the lake. - Return quickly, answered him the fairy, because I cannot do without you a long time. But before leaving, me the formula gives which binds a man forever.” Merlin did not answer. Arrived in king Uter, it informed the young boy, named Artus, that Ingerna had put at the world. It made some wisest and the best knight of the kingdom. To try to forget Viviane, the hermit took woman, Guendoleana; but they did not have a child. When the duke died, the legitimacy of Artus was called into question by the maidservant. One asked for the opinion of the wise old man who did not come to a conclusion about this point, but known as that on his return of voyage it would name the king of all Bretagnes.
Merlin thus set out again for its forest; on its way, it met insane which was delirious and was believed in the middle of a battle. The hermit touched it of his stick and cures it. It carried on its road, serious and concerned, because only insane can cure another of them; it however knew for a long time that its madness was of love for Viviane. Arrived close to the lake, it gave the order to the fairy of going to seek the sword to him. In paying to him, it rested its question: “Which is the formula to bind a man forever?” Merlin seizes sword étincelante, with the guard encrusted with precious stones, which it hid under its cap, and answered him by a good-bye.
Of return in the kingdom of Uter, it planted the sword in a large rock then convened all the dignitaries. That which would manage to withdraw the sword of the rock would become the legitimate king of all Bretagnes. All tested and all failed, except Artus which seizes sword and withdrew it so easily that all the knights joined with this new king. Merlin chooses among them fifty more courageous, the knights of the Roundtable, and the mission entrusted to them of bringing back Graal to England.
This myth is so long-lived still today, that Hollywood devoted to him there is a few years an excellent film entitled “Excalibur”.
When Merlin turned over close to his wife, it found it decided to ask him its freedom while returning its word to him; because, she said, her husband was too often absent: and she wanted to be able remarier to live happy the last years which remained to him. Merlin accepted and took again its road, curing on its passage, meditating in the large forests. When it had understood that nothing could cure it its madness of love, it joined Viviane close to the lake and the formula gave him to bind a man forever. At once, the fairy pronounced it and of the invisible cords firmly attached Merlin to the branches of large a houx. He was prisoner of love; its only joy until the end them time will be to contemplate its lady when she would condescend to approach the tree.
In the forest of Brocéliande, close to Paimpol, is fall to it supposed from Merlin. At the beginning of the century still, the young people who wished being delivered of a love not shared came to request close to this tomb, where large a houx pushes.
Merlin in the druidic tradition
Of XIIe in XIVe century were retranscribed the songs of the Celtic bards which had been maintained thanks to the oral tradition. What gave the famous novels of the cycle of the Roundtable. But there exists another version of the search of Graal. The author of Vita Merlini speaks about a hunting for the wild boar which could come from the oldest accounts druidic. The Christian additions replaced certainly the animal by the gold cut in which Joseph d' Arimathie collected the blood of Christ. We find with Graal the alchemical symbols of the two purest states of the matter, blood and gold. But hunting for wild boar remains closer to the myths of the people of the West and the matter symbolic system of the chart.
Celtic Merlin invites the knights to a hunting crowned with wild wild boar, semi-animal, semi-god; they will pursue it to the borders of the world. Initiatory hunting, first awakening of the primitive populations. That which will succeed in killing wild boar will adapt the divine one that the animal carries in it and the druid will do it king. Merlin takes part in this hunting, assembled on a stag whose horns are a lunar symbol. In the posterior chronicles, Viviane represents the carnal love, the limitation by the ground and the houx, the prison accepted by Merlin where lock up its own desires. This myth comprises two aspects, that of wise, the recluse who lights, initiates, prophesies, and that of insane of love; in fact, the research of the knowledge highest and the price to pay to have it. The stick binds the hermit to the ground and the wise one accepts this dependence because it knows that this stage is necessary to its research.
Popular survivals.
In 1271, prophecies were allotted to Merlin and some were carried out, like that on the king of England becoming king de France. They were in fact the work of a mysterious Richard of Ireland, and prophecies of Nostradamus, written a little less than three centuries later, resemble to them curiously. They are also hermetic and lend themselves to as many interpretations. Later the soldiers of Duguesclin said that he was the saver announced by Merlin.En England, about 1651, under the government of Cromwell, the royalists again called upon Merlin while making circulate the prophecies favorable to their cause and allotted to the famous enchanter. The opposing party instructed the Lilly astrologer to be opposed to this operation by other predictions. What Merlin in its forest of Brocéliande thought, the history does not say it.

VIIII - L'HERMITE

Hi!

I like card II The High Priestess

The High Priestess is considered a passive card. If you look at her, she is seated quietly. This isn't to say that there isn't substance to The High Priestess. She symbolizes energy that is bubbling under the surface. The card signifies things that cannot be seen at this point in time. The whole picture is not clear. However, there is much depth to the situation. It's kind of like the old saying, "Still waters run deep." Because of this, The High Priestess must be looked at very carefully in the context of the entire spread.

The card also signifies the ability to use intuition and receive inspiration from the spirits. It also may signify, depending on the spread, that the subject needs to keep his or her ideas and feelings secret. If they confide in somebody, they need to make sure that they pick just the right person. You also need to have complete faith in your feelings.

The reverse key of this card signifies a superficial situation; one with no real secrets. If this card comes up in the reverse position, you need to examine everything. Don't blindly give away your trust until you know the situation and understand it. This position can also refer to a person who is weak or lacking in energy. This could greatly affect a relationship or support that you may need from another person.

In the extreme cases, this reversed position suggests that a complete review of the entire situation is in order. In most cases, strength is lacking and a deeper commitment is needed in order to make the situation work.

The High Priestess is one of those very subtle cards that most people just kind of gloss over, but she can be a real force to reckon with. Whenever this card comes up in a spread, especially in the fifth or sixth position, that's when I worry. This usually tells me that I am going to be suddenly surprised by something. This is when I am most careful with the things I do, concentrating on the area of cards that make up the bulk of the spread, such as wands, cups, pentacles or swords.

i like the old stories and mythology. Of course, I don't have so much time to read all mythology in the world, but it is always nice and explains a lot about people's belithes and lives. People in past they didn't run mad as we do today.... a good poet or a good scald was very welcomed in any house. He was bringing wisdom and teaching people.... Very nice post.... I came today back to reread it.

i have a favorite pack of cards, Madam Lenorman's. But not that simple pack that everyone is using, but more complicated one, based on Greek mythology...
